How physical training can strengthen your leadership presence
Many Leaders I work with face a common challenge: how to stay grounded, clear, and focused while navigating pressure, expectations, and constant change. They want to:
- Be more present in conversations and meetings, not reactive or scattered
- Communicate with calm confidence, not overthinking every word
- Lead with energy without burning out
And often, they already have the skills, just not where they expect to find them.
Let me explain.
For years, BodyCombat has been my go-to workout. I love the intensity, the energy of group work, and the music. But I also discovered something else: it became my stress-level check-in moment.
On some days, I couldn’t keep up with the group. I would lose focus, caught in my running thoughts. That’s when I noticed that while jumping and kicking being present was the key.
Here’s what I learned from my workout
- I perform best when I’m in the here and now, not replaying the day, not comparing myself to others, just focusing on the rhythm and giving it my full attention.
- The group energy lifts me. When we move in sync, I feel stronger and more motivated.
- I don’t need to get every move right. What matters is showing up, doing the work, and trusting that progress will follow.
And I realized: this is Leadership in motion.
So why am I making this comparison?
Because one of the most powerful things we do as coaches is help people transfer insight from one part of life to another. Sometimes the clarity you need in your role as a Leader shows up in the gym, on a mountain trail, or in the kitchen. You already carry more wisdom than you think.
My BodyCombat reminders for Leadership
Be present: it changes how people experience you
Stop comparing: your leadership style doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s
Progress over perfection
Confidence comes from action
Energy is contagious, in both directions
Leadership is not just built through strategy sessions. It’s shaped in the everyday moments where we choose to respond with clarity, move with intention, and trust the process of showing up fully.
ASK YOURSELF
– What’s one skill or mindset you already use in another area of your life, that you could bring more intentionally into your Leadership?
– When was the last time you felt fully present and focused, and what made that possible?
– How would your leadership look if you stopped trying to lead like someone else and focused on your own strengths and voice?
